Some people think that when it comes to selling a house, it’s only the inside that really matters. While cool remodeling projects like gourmet kitchens or spa like bathrooms will help sell a house, the exterior is like a book cover - it’s the very first thing your potential buyers will pull up to when they come to your street or pull into your driveway and believe me, it does make a difference what the outside, especially the paint (or lack thereof) looks like. Over the years after doing a lot of house hunting from the time I was a college senior till a few years ago, I have seen a lot of houses - some were immaculate and had just as good of an exterior as an interior - while others were not. The ones that were not, got checked off the list of houses to see, really quickly. If you don’t want to scare off buyers you absolutely need to paint the exterior of the house and take care of it, not even just the house, but the whole lot as is. This includes grass and yard care, tree and shrubbery care, making sure your kids 50000 toys aren’t in the front lawn, etc. If you are looking for a few traditional colors to paint your traditional home, continue to read below for some ideas. By the way, white is a very traditional color, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only option you have. In fact, most real estate people will tell you that “traditional" and neutral colors sort of go hand in hand.
Off White Exterior
Essentially and maybe unfairly, the exterior of your house can either make or break a deal when it comes to potential buyers. It can also change their perception. For example, you may have gotten a loan and put a good $60,000 worth of renovations and remodeling into the inside of your home, but if the outside looks like crap, or its dirty, there is mildew on the walls, the trees and shrubbery are a mess, etc. people will turn away - it doesn’t matter how much money you dropped on the inside. Look at any home on a real estate site these days, and you will see exactly what I am talking about. One way to really create a clean look to your home’s exterior, is by using off white. It’s not as stark as regular white, and it goes with a lot of other goes. One scheme I really like is Hazelnut Cream (750C-2) as a base, accented by Gallery White (PPU12-12) and Dark Truffle (PPU5-19).
Putty Paint Color
This might be surprising, but even on a traditional home, realtors, designers and decorators are seeing an influx of the color Putty being used. This is a great color because it blends into the natural surroundings of the home and creates a really traditional look, or if you add other colors besides the ones I am about to suggest, you can also go French country, cottage, Cape Cod, etc. The colors used in this example go really well with the putty color which is a sort of creamy white like the option above, with light undertones of reddish brown. It’s a really hard paint color to explain, so just take a look at a few paint shops and see if you can find anything called Putty. Putty goes really well with gray hues and warm taupe hues as well.
Taupe Paint for the Exterior
Neutral is and has been popular a lot over the past 4 years and will probably continue to be. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that taupe is a very popular color for the exterior of a house. In fact, taupe is so popular that Sherwin Williams Tony Taupe SW 7028 is one of the bestselling exterior paint colors bar none. This color is a really traditional and class color when it comes to selling a home.
Gray Color
This has been such a big trendy color over the past few years; from the inside to the outside and in every room in the house. It’s surprising though because most people think of gray in that dreary cloudy day way. But, if you use the right gray it can create a really traditional look and it can look incredibly classy. When it comes to traditional and classy, go for light rather than dark. In this sample you can match Benjamin Moore Copley Gray (HC-104) trimmed with Benjamin Moore Elephant Tusk (OC-8).
Blue Gray
This isn’t necessarily a common color used on traditional homes when it comes to the body of the house, however, it can be used as an accent color. Blue gray is sort of like a navy gray color, it sometimes has a black paint color look to it in certain lights, hence why it goes well with white.
